Hello Friday: The Quality of Your Decisions are Based Upon the Quality of Your Emotions

The Quality of Your Decisions are Based Upon the Quality of Your Emotions at the Time

A couple quotes that I like from Albert Einstein reflective of this thinking are:

“Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome,”

And another closely related quote is:

“We can’t solve our problems with the same thinking that we used to create them.”

Another way to think about this is the “problem state” does not have the “solution” in it. So, what do you do?

How do you shift your mindset or thinking to move from being in the “problem state” to a space that is conducive to creating solutions?

I want to share with you a simple technique that you can use to enhance your performance or elicit new thinking when you face a problem or a challenge, shifting your mindset and creating a more useful state. A state that sets you up for more success in finding a solution to the problem you are facing or tackling a challenging problem that is “rearing its head”.

Before you begin the technique, you need to “break state” or “shake off your current thinking”. You can do this by standing up, shaking your body, jumping up and down, employing brain gym techniques … whatever helps you to move from your current state to neutral.

Then, try this technique:

1) Breathe – Breathe in deeply and slowly for a count of 5; hold your breath for a count of 7; and breathe out slowly for a count of 9. This simple breathing technique can shift you from your sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight stress response) to your parasympathetic nervous system (slowing you down, engaging your top down thinking, allowing you to see more broadly having a peripheral view, creative, innovative thinking, etc.)

2) Choose your state: thoughts, feelings, emotions: (what thoughts do you need to have, along with what emotions/feelings you want that will be more advantageous or useful to assist you in tackling the challenge, solving the problem, or thinking differently)

3) Choose your physiology: shift your body language to be consistent with your new thoughts, feelings and emotions that ready you to find new solutions. Head up. Shoulders back. Smile, etc., Remember; your neurology and your physiology are connected.

4) Performance: You are now set up for new thinking to help you solve your problem or tackle your challenge. The outcome: Success 😊!

My challenge to you: Try this technique on for size. This simple technique can make a big difference!

Have a GREAT day; Have a GREAT weekend!
