Monday Motivation: Pleasure & Pain


GOOD MORNING MONDAY – AFFIRMATIVE THOUGHTS FOR A GREAT WEEK

Good Morning. It is Monday. What a blessing!! You were gifted another 86,400 seconds! Be grateful and embrace everything your life has to offer; opportunities and challenges, pleasure and pain, for that is the fullness of life. Being fully alive means actively engaging in every moment; no matter what the moment brings. Sure, it is easier to engage in your life when you are experiencing more pleasures and opportunities than pain and challenges; but it is not realistic to think that life will not bring difficult experiences. If it does, then maybe you should ask yourself, “am I really living; am I taking risks; am I going forward in the direction of my dreams?” Living in a “protective cocoon” may seem like the best way to go; but it will never ever yield for you the heights of joy and exhilaration that living a full life can bring. The butterfly will never emerge!


Challenges and pain in life change you; they can build character, resilience and make you stronger. Too often we try to figure out how to “safely” decide; “safely” to encounter a new experience, “safely” move forward so that we don’t experience pain or challenges. When any adversity arises, we want it quickly gone … and that is natural; so, don’t beat yourself up about that response! But what if you shifted your mindset so that when you encountered challenges you reframed them from “enemy” to “teacher” and realized that whatever measure of discomfort you are feeling with this pain will equate to the level of success you will realize as you work through the challenge. You will learn. You will grow. You will be stronger. Now, that is a new perspective and can help you to see another side to the situation that can bring a benefit and will help you muster up the courage to endure.


Often, it is during life’s challenges and pain that you find out who you really are.You need to believe that you are Unstoppable; not because you don’t experience failures, doubts, challenges, and pain; but because you continue despite them. When you experience obstacles, challenges, and pain look it right in the eye. Be ok with it. Sit with it. Feel the feelings. Label the emotions. Doing this allows you to honor exactly what is going on and not “stuffing” it down deep inside of you only for it to rear its “ugly head” later.Remember this Henry Ford quote, “Airplanes take off against the wind, not with it.” When you experience wind tunnels in your life, make the decision that in that moment, you will “Find Your Brave!” What might that look like?


  • Face reality – don’t avoid the issue. When using the “reality principle” you have a deeper capacity to deal with life more effectively. As you do this, you gain more and more confidence and you grow stronger.

  • Embrace your life as it is instead of what you “wish” it to be. The Buddha said the secret to life is to want what you have and to not want what you don’t have. Be present and embrace all parts of your life just as they are. When you do this, you can mine the treasures that are there for you.

  • Take your time – catch your breath. Don’t be in a hurry to make all your decisions immediately. As the story with the tortoise and the hare goes, slow and steady will win the race.

  • Practice gratitude – Count your blessings; not your troubles. A change in perspective can make all the difference in the world. Believing in the good you have and the possibilities of more to come can help you cope with difficulties you are encountering.

  • Experience all your feelings – even the painful ones. Feelings are a source of motivation. They are the juice of life. Without them, your life would not have dimension and color.

  • Realize obstacles, pain, success and pleasure are all part of life’s journey. We are all learning. Life is dynamic. You succeed. You fail. You try. You experience an obstacle. You fall. You get up. Know that you will recover. The only way to gain confidence in yourself is to experience it all and just keep getting back up.

  • Stay connected to loving relationships. It is easy to neglect what matters most. Choose your relationships every day. Earn your relationships every day. It takes commitment for them to continue to work. Make that commitment. Accept the reality that relationships will bring pleasure and pain. When pain occurs, forgive and ask for forgiveness. This is the path to stronger, lasting, fulfilling connections with those who surround you.

The clearest route to bliss is to be fully alive while you are here; that means experiencing both pleasure and pain; opportunities and challenges. You may stumble, but you stand up more than you fall. Falling does not make you who you are; rising and continuing does! This is the part where you find out who you are; you may not be there yet; but you are closer than you were yesterday!
