Happy Friday! Another week has flown by and a busy holiday week is in the rearview mirror. After a holiday week or weekend, you can often feel drained and exhausted. During these times, it is important to ask yourself “what is it that I need to do for replenishment?” Many times we do not pause, reflect and ask ourselves this question because of all the obligations of day to day life, work, and family responsibility. Often, you may feel that your resources are better expended on others instead of expending them on YOU, but self-care is just as significant; if not more significant.
So, what is self-care? Self-care is any activity that you do deliberately to be good to yourself and take care of your health and well-being (physical, mental, and emotional). It is about loving yourself, knowing yourself and realizing when your resources are running low so that you take time to refuel. Taking time for yourself is not a selfish act. By taking care of your own needs, it allows you to have the resources to give to your work, activities, relationships, and family.
There is no “one size fits all” method of self-care. What you may need to get you through on one occasion, can be totally different on another day and for another situation. Also, YOU are unique; so the recipe for you can be very different than it is for another. It is all about figuring out what feeds your soul. Some examples of self-care can be getting lunch with a friend, meditation, spending time in nature, reading a book, doing a puzzle, writing in your journal, taking a bath… the possibilities are endless. Figure out what you need to recharge and make time to do it; YOU are worth it!
Please think about taking some time this weekend to focus on your needs. You (and all of those around you) will be glad you did!
